Public invited to Marquette-area trucking meetings

MARQUETTE, MI--   The City and Township of Marquette are holding meetings this week to talk about trucking routes through the area.

The City Commission has scheduled a special meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Commission chambers.  It will take input from all interested parties on a proposed truck route ordinance that would designate eight routes within the city and restrict trucks over 10,000 pounds elsewhere.

But the proposal does not include a route through the city to and from County Road 550.  Officials cite public safety concerns.

Marquette Township officials say that aspect of the ordinance needs to be addressed, as it would—if adopted—impact all commercial haulers, not just those connected to the Eagle mine.

The Township Board is holding its own work session Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Township Community Center.  Officials hope talks will lead to a regional transportation study and eventually a joint regional trucking ordinance.

Several entities connected to the issue recently asked state lawmakers for $500,000 to conduct a study and $8.5 million to implement it.  No such funding has yet been provided.
