Recreation projects get grants from Portage Health Foundation

HOUGHTON, MI--   The Portage Health Foundation has awarded nearly $80,000 to four recreational projects in the Copper Country.

The Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club received $20,000 to rebuild the Churning Rapids single track.

Eagle River got $19,500 to build a new two-acre park following the theme of “exercise opportunities for all.” It will be used for walking, jogging, strolling or rolling.

Chassell Township was awarded $20,000. It will use the money to acquire a canoe/kayak launch dock and ramp connecting it to the shore on the old US-41 right-of-way on the northwest side of the US-41 bridge over the Sturgeon River.

Calumet Township got $20,000 to create a four-season outdoor recreation area across from the Mine Street Station Shopping Center.

All projects will be started and finished this year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
