Recreational pot sales allowed at former Gogebic County prison

MARENISCO TOWNSHIP, MI--   The Marenisco Township Board of Trustees this week voted to allow marijuana sales at the former Ojibway Correctional Facility.

The Ironwood Globe says the vote was unanimous and changed the zoning in the area from Commercial 1 to Commercial 2.

The state shut down the prison in December of 2018 and later approved legislation to allow commercial entities to purchase the property.

Township Supervisor Bruce Mahler says a recreational marijuana shop at or near the site of the former prison could generate jobs.

The state of Michigan still owns the property, which means the township is not receiving any property tax.
