Sault Ste. Marie airport receives grant for upgrades

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Chippewa County International Airport is getting federal funding for improvements.

The Sault Ste. Marie facility will receive more than $689,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration for runway lighting and rehabilitation. The grant will also be used to fund an approach survey to identify existing obstructions to runway approaches and an update to Airports Geographic Information System data.

Airport Manager Tami Beseau says the money will allow officials to make upgrades to runway lighting and paint and seal runway cracks, which will enhance the longevity of the facility.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
