SEMCO raising its rates

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved a $19.9 million rate increase for Semco Energy Gas Company.

The utility had sought an increase of more than $38 million. SEMCO says it will use the money to replace aging gas mains and create an infrastructure reliability improvement program.

The average residential customer will see a 9.2 percent increase in their bill, or about $6.10. The increase includes a 75-cent rise in the monthly customer charge to $12.25.

As part of the agreement SEMCO will create an income assistance program for 10,500 low-income customers, who would receive a monthly credit of $12.25. The utility would also add a low-income assistance credit program for 2,000 customers, who would receive a monthly credit of $30.
