Senator says school districts should get snow day forgiveness

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Michigan should forgive the school districts who have needed to take multiple snow days, according to at least one state senator.

Districts are allowed to take six snow days over the course of the school year - with an additional three days if the state approves a waiver.

But some school districts are already at or above those limits - with a good portion of the school year still to go.

Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich says the state should forgive school districts for the snow days they have needed to take off. And moving forward he says anytime the Governor declares a state of emergency snow days should be automatically waived.

“So going forward we’ll make a future change but for this year we say those - I mean people made decisions based on the well-being of staff and students, it’s an unusual circumstance and we need to give people some relief,” he says.

Ananich says he hasn’t spoken to his colleagues yet, but he expects to be drafting legislation soon to forgive school districts of their snow days.
