SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (AP)--   Classmates are making memorial cards for a 12-year-old girl who died after a gun discharged in the vehicle in which she was riding on Chippewa County’s Drummond Island.

Shellsea Lefebre of Sault Ste. Marie attended Sault Area Middle School.  Principal Dean Paul says students are making cards and putting them on lockers.

Authorities say she was shot Sunday during a weekend youth hunt.  The island is in Lake Huron in Drummond Township, about 50 miles southeast of the Soo.

Officials say Lefebre was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle, occupied by two adults and another child, when a hunting rifle discharged in the front seat.  Sheriff Robert Savoie says the gun's safety wasn't activated.

Her death remains under investigation.
