Soo Tribe Board member removed for marijuana possession

MUNISING, MI--   A member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Board of Directors has been removed from her position.

According to the Tribe’s website, a decision to remove Rita Glyptis from Unit V in Munising was issued Thursday.  Glyptis had been convicted in Tribal court for possession of marijuana last May.

The removal opinion and order states the Tribe “has a zero tolerance policy as to illegal drugs, an interest in a membership that is free from illegal drugs, and keeping illegal drugs off the reservation.”  It says that warrants Glyptis’ removal.

An open hearing was held December 3 at the Tribal Center in Munising.

The Board of Directors must now appoint a Tribal member to fill the vacant seat.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
