South Beach closed, reopened for third time

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Marquette beach reopened Sunday after the city shut it down due to bacterial concerns.

It was the third time South Beach was closed to the public because of high levels of E. coli in the water.  Officials barred residents from swimming on July 20 and August 9 after readings of more than 300 parts of E. coli per hundred milliliters were taken.  North Beach was closed for the same reason on July 27.

Officials are trying to determine the cause of the high bacterial levels.  Possibilities include sewage runoff, animal waste, and storm water overflow.

They plan to continue daily testing of city beaches.
