Stabenow, James participate in second debate

DETROIT, MI (MPRN)--   Michigan’s senior U.S. Senator and her Republican opponent met for a debate at the Detroit Economic Club Monday.

Eighteen-year incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow faces challenger John James, a Detroit native and Army combat veteran.

James accuses Stabenow of being a mediocre and ineffective legislator in Washington.

Stabenow counters that as the ranking Democrat on the Senate’s agriculture committee, she’s done a lot for the state’s farmers, and to protect the Great Lakes. She also accused James of not offering any specifics about his plans.

“When someone doesn’t have a lot to say, they just attack the other side. If they don’t have their own solutions. That’s politics,” she said.

James sought to distance himself somewhat from President Trump and Republicans.

“Please pick person over party,” he said. “Don’t just judge me because you think you know me because there’s an R by my name. I’m running as a Republican because I’m conservative, not the other way around.”

Stabenow called that “interesting,” given James’s previous touting of Trump’s endorsement.
