State Fair opens in Escanaba

ESCANABA, MI (AP)--   The Upper Peninsula State Fair gets underway Monday in Escanaba and continues all week, with live entertainment, a carnival midway, livestock exhibits and more.

Josh Thompson, Tyler Farr, Drowning Pool and the Beatles tribute band Fab Four will perform. Members of the famed acrobatic Wallenda family will display aerial artistry.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is looking for help with teaching children about hunting and fishing at its "pocket park" during the fair, which ends Sunday.

The DNR says it needs volunteers ages 15 or older to staff the fishing pier and archery and pellet gun ranges.

Education specialist Janet Canode says it's a good way for outdoor enthusiasts to share their expertise and engage the next generation of hunters and anglers.
