State Police called to accidental shooting in Baraga Township

BARAGA TOWNSHIP, MI--   Troopers are calling a shooting in Baraga County over the weekend accidental.

State Police from the Calumet Post received a report Saturday around 12:50 a.m. that a man had been shot at a residence in Baraga Township. Officers found a 31-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and a 28-year-old Ashland, Wisconsin man who was giving the victim first aid.

Troopers determined the victim had stepped outside of a garage they were in when the Wisconsin man picked up a firearm. The Ashland man was handling the firearm when it discharged, causing the round to go through the garage door and hit the victim.

The two men are close friends and were drinking alcohol prior to the incident.

The victim was taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, then transferred to UPHS-Marquette for further treatment.

Troopers say the incident appears to be an accidental discharge of a firearm and remains under investigation.
