Statue winners announced at Winter Carnival in Houghton

HOUGHTON, MI--   For the second time in the past three years, Tau Kappa Epsilon took first place in the month-long statue division at Michigan Tech’s Winter Carnival.

This year’s theme was “Myths and tales of the past in our frigid forecast.” The TKE’s winning entry along US-41 is “Behold a frozen Thor, mighty god of Viking lore.”

Second place in the overall section went to last year’s winner, Phi Kappa Tau, for “A sword is drawn from a stone and a king ascends an icy throne.” It can be found on Quincy Street in Hancock.

In the all-nighter category, St. Albert the Great University Parrish repeated as the overall winner with a nod to St. George and the Dragon.

An awards ceremony will be held Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the Rozsa Center, followed by a torchlight parade and fireworks at Mont Ripley at 9:15.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
