Suspect in Escanaba assault sentenced

ESCANABA, MI--   A Kansas man has been sentenced for the hatchet attack of an Escanaba man in April.

Timothy Heitz, 19, was charged with assault with intent to murder and carrying a concealed weapon.  He was accused of using the rounded end of a hatchet to beat a 31-year-old man in Escanaba. 

Heitz was sentenced Friday to 4 years and 9 months to 10 years in prison on the assault charge and 2 to 5 years on the weapons charge.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
