Tanker spills diesel fuel in Wells Township

WELLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A fuel truck transporting 8,200 gallons of diesel spilled about 100 gallons of its load after the vehicle tipped over in Wells Township Saturday.

Michigan State Police say the Stang WI Corp. truck was headed westbound on CR 426 to the Arnold gas station around 9:20 a.m. when the 59-year-old driver drove onto the soft shoulder, causing the tanker to fall over onto its side. Fuel spilled out of both the tanker and the truck’s own fuel tanks.

The Wells Township Fire Department responded to the scene, along with the Forsyth Township Fire Department and Marquette County 131. Krist Oil Company will drain the remaining fuel out of the truck and transfer it into one of its own tankers.

Officials say the Department of Environmental Quality has been notified, and will evaluate and coordinate cleanup efforts.

The westbound lane of traffic remains closed. Authorities hope to have the tanker removed and scene cleared up by Sunday.
