Three hospitalized in L'Anse Township crash

L'ANSE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Several people were injured in a three-vehicle accident in Baraga County Wednesday.

Around 8:30 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a crash on US-41 and Canyon Falls in L’Anse Township. They say a northbound vehicle driven by Ryan Thomas, 32, of Marquette hit a southbound vehicle driven by James Tricka, 55, of Bessemer, head-on.  Tricka’s vehicle was then hit by a northbound semi driven by Brad Trudell, 39, of Calumet.

Two passengers in the Thomas vehicle—a 5-year-old and a 7-year-old—were taken to UPHS Marquette for treatment.  Thomas had to be extricated from his vehicle by the L’Anse Fire Department using the Jaws of Life.  He was taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, then transferred to UPHS Marquette.

Tricka and his 54-year-old passenger sought their own treatment.  The truck driver wasn’t injured in the crash.

Officials say there were white-out conditions at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.

The Michigan DNR assisted at the scene.
