Three-vehicle accident injures three in Portage Township

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Three people were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash in Houghton County Sunday.

State Police from the Calumet Post were dispatched to M-26 near Canal Road in Portage Township around 10:30 a.m. They say an eastbound car driven by Darcy Way, a 52-year-old male from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, crossed the centerline and sideswiped a westbound car driven by Linda Belote, 76, of Hancock. Way’s car then struck another westbound vehicle driven by Sharon Waarala, 60, of Laurium.

All three drivers were taken to UPHS Portage. Way was airlifted to the University of Michigan Health System by Valley Med Flight. Belote was treated and released, and Waarala was admitted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers say way suffered a medical emergency that caused him to cross the centerline.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
