Tornado confirmed in Delta County

ESCANABA, MI--   The National Weather Service has confirmed an F-1 tornado touched down about 5 miles west of Escanaba Monday evening.

The funnel was seen by drivers on US-2 around 5:30 as it touched down near Pete's Pick N’ Pull auto parts. It snapped and knocked down several utility poles and trees, some of which fell onto a residence.

The tornado moved northeast across the highway and damaged storage units at Pine Ridge Storage. It continued into a wooded area, where hundreds of trees were snapped and uprooted. A downburst caused wind damage at the end of the funnel’s path.

Officials say the tornado lasted less than two minutes. It was about 200 yards wide and traveled 0.61 miles with an estimated peak wind of 95 miles per hour.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
