U.P. towns get money for water infrastructure improvements

MARQUETTE, MI--   The USDA is providing funding to two Upper Peninsula communities for water and sewer improvements.

The City of Munising is getting a $4.65 million loan to improve the city’s water system. Officials say sections of the water main under M-28 are more than 100 years old.

The City of Houghton will receive $2.25 million in loans and $1.5 million in grants. The money will go toward improving water and sewer systems that date to the early 1900s. Officials say the system is plagued with multiple leaks, recurring maintenance issues, and is in violation of the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act.

The money comes through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program, which serves rural municipalities with 10,000 or fewer residents.
