Traffic fatality reported in Houghton County

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Portage Township on Friday.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 2:30 p.m. on Superior Road near Boundary Road.

Steven Long, 59, of Portage Township apparently overcorrected his vehicle. It crossed the roadway, entered a ditch and struck a culvert. The vehicle then bounced over a driveway and into a yard about 75 feet before it hit a tree.

Long was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
