COPPER HARBOR, MI (AP)-- Federal officials have formally recognized a trail network in the Keweenaw as a national recreation trail.
The 30-mile-long Copper Harbor Trails system is among 21 trails to gain the designation Saturday. U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis made the announcement in celebration of National Trails Day.
The Copper Harbor network is at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It offers panoramic views of Lake Superior and extensive single-track routes over cedar-planked bridges and boardwalks. It also has flow and gravity trails and winds along old-growth forests, streams, inland lakes and historically significant places.
The national recreation trail program is administered by the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service.
