TRIDENT arrests second person in Sault overdose death

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The Tri-County Drug Enforcement Taskforce has arrested a second person in connection with an overdose death in Chippewa County last year.

Jessica Daley died of an overdose on September 23. Derek Erickson, 34, of Sault Ste. Marie was charged in December with delivery of a controlled substance, causing death.

On Tuesday TRIDENT arrested 34-year-old Melanie Minta of the Soo. She was charged with accessory after the fact and using a computer to commit a crime. Detectives say Minta illegally accessed Daley’s protected health information from multiple sources after the overdose occurred. She also allegedly corresponded with Erickson about the overdose.

The Sault Tribe Health Center and War Memorial Hospital assisted in the investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
