Troopers investigate fatal accident in Stambaugh Township

STAMBAUGH TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Wisconsin man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Iron County Sunday.

Michigan State Police from the Iron Mountain Post responded around 12:20 a.m. to the intersection of Federal Forest Highway 16 and Smokey Lake Road in Stambaugh Township. Investigation determined a pickup driven by Verne St. Pierre, 64, of Phelps, Wisconsin left the road and crashed into several trees.

St. Pierre had to be extricated from the vehicle. He told troopers at the scene he had fallen asleep.

St. Pierre was taken to Aspirus Hospital in Iron River, where he succumbed to his injuries. Officials say he was wearing his seat belt and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
