LANSING, MI-- The Michigan House of Representatives has approved a resolution celebrating the Upper Peninsula’s 183rd birthday on Saturday.
December 14 marks the Frostbitten Convention of 1836. The event granted Ohio a strip of land including Toledo, while Michigan was given territory that would become the Upper Peninsula.
Michigan delegates gathered at the Frostbitten Convention to approve the new proposed territorial boundaries, setting up the pathway for Michigan’s statehood a few weeks later.
In 2016 the House approved a resolution introduced by Representative Sara Cambensy commemorating December 14 as the U.P.’s official birthday.
