University groups hold "Resistance Day" event

MARQUETTE, MI--   Three Northern Michigan University groups are sponsoring an event opposing Columbus Day.

The Native American Student Association, American Indian Science and Engineering Society, and the Native American Language and Culture Club are holding a petition drive for NMU to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

October 12 marks the day Columbus landed in the Americas in 1492.  For Native people it also marks the beginning of colonialism, suppression of their culture, and discrimination.

The NMU groups will have an information table with a petition in the academic mall Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more information, call 227-1397.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
