UPDATE: Coast Guard, local agencies searching for missing kayaker in Green Bay

UPDATE, 8/20/17:  The Coast Guard suspended its search Sunday, pending further information or developments.

MILWAUKEE, WI--   The Coast Guard, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and local agencies are searching for a kayaker who went missing Saturday in Green Bay near Horseshoe Island off of Peninsula State Park. 

Family members of the 20-year-old man contacted the Door County Sheriffs Department shortly before 9 p.m. indicating he was expected to return by 4 p.m. The man was believed to have been kayaking from Nicolet Bay to Horseshoe Island.

Door County Sheriffs notified the Coast Guard shortly after 10 p.m. after a crew from WDNR notified them that they had found a kayak on Horseshoe Island. The man's vehicle was located at a nearby boat ramp with his cell phone and a life jacket inside.

Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan command center in Milwaukee launched a rescue crew from Station Washington Island aboard a 25-foot response boat and an aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Traverse City, Michigan at about 10:15 p.m.

The Coast Guard searched throughout the night.

Currently on scene are crews from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, WDNR, Door County Sheriffs, Gibraltar Police and Fire Departments, and Ephraim Fire Department.
