WELLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A train was derailed when a dump truck hit it in Wells Township Thursday.

Michigan State Police from the Gladstone Post say the accident happened just before 3 p.m. on Danforth Road just west of 19th Avenue North. The truck was pulling a trailer carrying an excavator. It was eastbound on Danforth Road and headed downhill on a slope when it struck a Canadian National train at a crossing.

Officials say the crossing lights, gate and bells were all activated at the time of the crash. The force of the collision caused some of the train cars to derail.

The driver of the dump truck was taken to the hospital by Life Flight.

A portion of Danforth Road will be closed until further notice.

The crash remains under investigation.
