USDA money to aid U.P. projects

MARQUETTE, MI--   Two Upper Peninsula entities will benefit from loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The money comes from the Community Facilities Direct Loan program. It aims to help rural communities by improving infrastructure for local charities, governments and hospitals.

The St. Ignace Building Authority is receiving a $2.2 million loan to construct a fire station. The 10,000-square-foot station will replace one less than half its size.

Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital is receiving a $2,609,509 loan to purchase and implement an electronic medical record (EMR) system. The hospital operates several departments, including the rural health clinic. This EMR system will allow the hospital and clinic to share medical records electronically. The implementation will take seven months, with a projected go-live launch in January 2020.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
