Vehicle hits guy wire, garage in fatal Iron Mountain accident

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   The Iron Mountain Police Department is investigating a single-vehicle crash on US-2 near Sixth Street.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene around 12:15 a.m. Thursday. A 68-year-old woman from the Iron Mountain area was southbound on the highway when her vehicle left the west side and struck a guy wire for a power pole. The vehicle spun out of control and crossed to the east side of the highway, left the road and struck a garage.

Officials say lifesaving efforts were begun but were unsuccessful. The woman died a short time later at Dickinson County Health System.

Police believe the accident was caused by a preexisting medical condition, and that the driver’s death was a result of the condition, not the crash. The official cause of death is yet to be determined by the Dickinson County Medical Examiner.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
