Wandering child found in Gogebic County

ERWIN TOWNSHIP, MI--   The search for a missing child in Gogebic County ended happily Tuesday.

Around 10 a.m. Central Dispatch received a report that a 4-year-old boy was missing from a campsite near McDonald’s Dam in Erwin Township. The child’s mother said her son had been playing with other children and had possibly wandered off.

Sheriff’s deputies, Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post and Gogebic County Search and Rescue responded. They organized a team and began to search the area.

A deputy on an ATV found the child in dense woods about a 1.5 miles away. He was returned to the campsite, evaluated by medical personnel, and returned to his mother.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
