ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK (AP)-- Scientists say two gray wolves recently crossed an ice bridge from Canada to Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior but stayed only five days before returning.
The short visit dashed hopes that ice formed by bitter weather over the past two winters would encourage more wolves to migrate to the island park and replenish its dwindling wolf population.
Biologist Seth Moore of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in Minnesota says one of the wolves was a radio-collared female, while the second had no collar. He says they made the 14-mile crossing February 22 and wandered back to the mainland February 27.
Michigan Technological University scientist Rolf Peterson says the event shows that human intervention may be the only way to boost the park's wolf numbers.
