Woman charged in fatal Chippewa County truck crash

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   A De Tour woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal Chippewa County traffic accident in December.

The County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash on east M-48 near East Townline Road on December 2.  A pickup had rolled over onto its top, trapping Benjamin Hilts, 35, of De Tour inside.  Fire personnel had to cut Hilts out of the truck.  He ultimately died of his injuries.

Deputies say evidence at the scene suggested someone else had been driving the vehicle.  Investigation led to the arrest of Tiffany Dumback, 37, of De Tour.  She was charged with manslaughter with a motor vehicle and failure to report an accident.

Officials say speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
