Woman injured when bus part smashes through vehicle window near Crystal Falls

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   One person is seriously injured, after part of a school bus being hauled in Iron County crashed through a vehicle window.

Monday around 5:45 p.m. sheriff’s deputies were called to US-141 north of Crystal Falls.  They say a family of three was northbound near Correl Road when they approached a wrecker towing the bus, which was going to be salvaged.  As the vehicle came up behind it, the bus’ drive shaft came apart, sending the U-joint and short shaft through the vehicle’s passenger-side windshield.  The passenger was struck in the face and shoulder.

The victim was airlifted from Pine River’s Landing to a hospital in Wausau, Wisconsin.  She remains in stable but serious condition.  No one else in the vehicle was hurt.

The driver of the wrecker said he “heard something detonate” as he drove down a hill in Amasa.

The accident remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
