Woman trapped in vehicle after Chocolay crash

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI--   A two-vehicle accident in Chocolay Township Thursday trapped one woman in her car. 

Township Police say around 11:12 a.m. Michael Poirier, 63, of Sault Ste. Marie was southbound on US-41 when he ran a red light at the intersection of Silver Creek Road.  He hit an eastbound vehicle driven by Sharon Hahka, 75, of Harvey. 

Officials had to use the “jaws of life” to remove Hahka from her vehicle.  She and her passenger were taken to U.P. Health System Marquette with neck and back injuries. 

The accident remains under investigation.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
