Woman wins when truck plunges into Little Bay de Noc

Escanaba Daily Press

ESCANABA, MI (AP)--   It's become a tradition in Escanaba, perhaps the real end to winter: When will a pickup truck fall through the melting ice in Little Bay de Noc?

It finally happened Thursday, and the winning prediction was made by Cheryl Ohman, who guessed the correct date. Her time prediction was just 25 seconds off the exact time.

Ohman gets about $1,600, free tires and two passes to Bark River International Raceway. The icebreaker contest is sponsored by the Bark River Lions Club, which spends half of the $2 entry fee on local charity.

The pickup has no engine. It also is tethered to a dock with a cable so it's easier to retrieve when it falls through the ice.
