Work starts on part of Iron Ore Heritage Trail

MARQUETTE, MI--   Work to repair and stabilize a portion of the Iron Ore Heritage Trail begins this week.

The Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority says repairs will focus on five areas of the paved trail between the Welcome Center in Chocolay Township and Lake Street in Marquette. Officials say high Lake Superior water levels and strong storms have eroded the shoreline and slopes, endangering the trail.

Workers will install filter fabric and crushed rock to reinforce the slopes; place large boulders from the bottom to the top of the slope; and follow with topsoil, seed and mulch.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the IOHRA, the City of Marquette and Chocolay Township have committed funds totaling $256,000 to the project.

The work is expected to be done within five weeks.
