Youth injures knee while hiking Sugarloaf

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A downstate boy was injured while hiking Sugarloaf Mountain Thursday.

Around 12:40 p.m. the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the top of the mountain. They say a family was hiking when a 14-year-old boy suffered a knee injury. His family tried to help him down the mountain but the boy was in too much pain to continue.

Marquette Township Fire/Rescue and Chocolay Township Fire/Rescue used a stokes basket with a large, soft tire to get the youth down to the parking lot. He was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

Officials remind outdoor enthusiasts to wear proper footwear and bring water with them while enjoying the U.P.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
