Kayaker found safe in the Keweenaw after police receive SOS notification

GRANT TOWNSHIP, MI— A Minnesota man is safe, after officials in the Keweenaw received a distress signal offshore.

Monday around 2 p.m., the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an SOS off of Horseshoe Trail in Grant Township. The Copper Harbor Fire Department, Keweenaw County Search and Rescue, DNR Parks and Recreation, and the U.S. Coast Guard were also deployed to look for Cale Prozen of Minnesota.

Deputies launched a personal watercraft and a boat. The Parks and Rec crew and Coast Guard also launched boats, while the fire department and Search and Rescue searched the area by land.

Due to favorable weather conditions, Prozen and his kayak were located quickly north of Keystone Bay by the personal watercraft. Officials determined Prozen wasn’t in any danger, but had a faulty emergency beacon.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all the responding agencies and remind the public to double check their equipment and know their limits before venturing into the outlying landscapes to enjoy the area.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
