MUNISING TOWNSHIP

ROCK RIVER TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal house fire in Alger County.

Troopers from the Munising detachment were called to N5113 ET Road Saturday around 1 a.m. Firefighters from the Rock River Township Fire Department discovered remains inside the house after the flames were 

extinguished.

The house itself was completely destroyed.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but foul play is not suspected.

No names have yet been released.

UPDATE:  Officials say the man has been identified as Jason Bashor, 34, of Maryland. The woman is Shaena Hicks, 34, of Virginia.

SHINGLETON, MI--   An Alger County snowmobile accident has killed one person and injured another. 

WLUC-TV reports it happened Sunday around 1:20 p.m. about a mile west of M-94 on Trail #8 in Shingleton. Officials say two snowmobiles operated by a 34-year-old man and 34-year-old woman were westbound when they failed to negotiate a curve. The machines left the trail and struck several trees.

ALGER COUNTY, MI--   A Marquette County man is hospitalized, following a crash in Alger County.

Troopers from the Negaunee Post say it happened Sunday around 1:15 a.m. on M-94 near Rumley Road. Investigation indicates the 46-year-old driver had been eastbound when he lost control of his vehicle, went off the roadway, and overturned.

The man was taken to UPHS-Marquette with serious injuries.

Troopers say alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

AUTRAIN TOWNSHIP

MUNISING, MI (AP)--   A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of a Munising police officer who fatally shot an unarmed man after an Alger County car chase that reached 100 miles per hour. 

MUNISING, MI--    An Alger County man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a juvenile. 

Thomas Lemoine was accused of assaulting the victim at an AuTrain campground in July of 2014.  He was arrested by Michigan State Police on April 6 of this year.

Troopers say Lemoine was found guilty of second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a juvenile less than 13 years of age by an Alger County jury on December 2.  He was taken into custody and will remain at the Alger County Jail until his January sentencing.

PROPOSITION FOR AUTRAIN TOWSHIP TO FUND GENERAL OPERATING SERVICES

ALGER COUNTY, MI--   The search for a missing Manistee County woman has come to an unfortunate end.

The body of Malvika Deshmukh, 28, of Bear Lake was found Saturday, October 29 in Alger County. 

Michigan State Police Detective Sarah Krebs says Deshmukh was near her vehicle, which was found in a remote area near the North Country Trail Head near Rock River Road on September 23.  Krebs says the cause of death is being determined, but foul play is not suspected at this time.
