WASHINGTON, D.C.--   Each spring, the Congressional Institute and participating Members of Congress sponsor An Artistic Discovery, a nationwide high school visual art competition that recognizes and encourages artistic talent in each congressional district. 

Since the pilot competition in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

HOUGHTON, MI--   Congressman Jack Bergman says he’s running for reelection. 

WLUC-TV says the Republican from Watersmeet made the announcement at a meeting of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce in Houghton Saturday.

Bergman was first elected to Michigan’s 1st district in 2016. The district covers the entire Upper Peninsula and 16 counties in northern lower Michigan.

His committee assignments include Armed Services, the Budget, Natural Resources and Veterans’ Affairs.

Bergman is a retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant general.  

SAWYER, MI--   Sawyer International Airport has received a major grant for expansion of a hangar.

Congressman Jack Bergman announced the $1,099,199 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Wednesday. Airport officials applied for the funding from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Military Airports Program. It will be used to design and engineer the expansion of Hangar 665 so it can service larger aircraft.

MARQUETTE, MI--   Congressman Jack Bergman has announced millions of dollars in grant money is headed to three U.P. counties affected by last year’s Father’s Day flooding. 

On June 17, 2018 portions of Houghton, Gogebic and Menominee counties received 7 to 10 inches of rain in a matter of hours. That caused extreme runoff and flooding. Significant damage to state and local Federal-aid routes resulted, including several bridge and culvert washouts. One fatality directly attributable to the event was reported.

WASHINGTON, D.C.--   Six Michigan members of Congress, including Congressman Jack Bergman, are urging the Federal Communications Commission to improve the accuracy of broadband availability maps. 

The group sent a letter to FCC chairman Ajit Pai, saying the scattered, lacking landscape of broadband availability in rural regions is worse than it appears on the FCC’s broadband maps. Bergman says that jeopardizes broadband infrastructure funding for areas that critically need it.

WASHINGTON, D.C.--   Congressman Jack Bergman has announced two U.P. agencies have received grants for Senior Corps RSVP programming. 

The money comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service. It was awarded as part of a grant competition to strengthen and expand Retired and Senior Volunteer Program – or RSVP – programming.

Marquette County Aging Services will receive $40,000 and the Menominee, Delta, Schoolcraft Community Action Agency & Human Resources Authority $66,968.
