CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   A Crystal Falls man had died in a snowmobile accident in Iron County.

The Sheriff’s Office says it happened Tuesday around 9:15 p.m. on Trail 113 south of Superior Avenue in Crystal Falls. Preliminary investigation shows the 42-year-old driver was northbound when he failed to negotiate a curve. The snowmobile hit a tree and ejected the driver.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   The Iron County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the death of an inmate. 

January 11 around 7:50 a.m. deputies discovered a deceased inmate in the county jail. He is identified as Jonathan Parker.

Officials conducted an investigation and concluded Parker took his own life.

The Michigan State Police has been asked to do an independent investigation of the death.

No further details have been released at this time.

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   An Iron County community is benefitting from a U.S. Department of Agriculture program designed to improve rural water infrastructure across the country. 

The City of Crystal Falls is getting a $7 million loan and $1.4 million grant to improve three lift stations, replace force main piping, and replace the original 1967 gravity sewer pipe. Officials will also restore lagoon cells to the original design.

The sewer system serves 750 residential and 90 commercial customers.

Fall is in the air in the Upper Peninsula, where we start to get cozy, go apple picking, hit as many events before the snow starts flying.  That's the plan at The Crystal Theatre, where in October, they have a full schedule of events before they wind down for the season.

Beethoven & Banjos returns for the fifth annual cross-genre music festival, Sunday October 6 at 2pm.  This collaboration between members of Decoda (Carnegie Hall's affiliate ensemble) and a folk ensemble brings artistic director Evan Premo's vision to The Crystal Theatre again, with sister Laurel Premo.

The Crystal's "Legend" series brings country music icon Lee Greenwood to the stage Friday October 11th at 7pm.  Greenwood has more than 30 albums to his credit, including the hit "God Bless the U.S.A."

The following Saturday, October 12th, brings classical pianist Trevor Stephenson & Friends to The Crystal Theatre, performing the original arrangements of American masterworks (music for piano and vocal quartet), with the Madison Bach Musicians.

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   An 81-year-old Crystal Falls man has pleaded guilty to charges he had sexual contact with a boy under the age of 13. 

Earl Otchingwanigan was accused of committing the crimes with a male living in the same house between 2000 and 2007. The victim said he was between the ages of 7 and 14 at the time.

Otchingwanigan has pleaded to 1st-degree criminal sexual conduct in Iron County Circuit Court. His bond has been revoked and he remains lodged in the Iron County Jail.

Sentencing is set for November 26.

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   A Crystal Falls woman arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed an Iron County camp last October has been sentenced.

Rachael Kirschner, 25, was arrested along with Troy Evert, 21, of Crystal Falls in February. They were charged with 2nd-degree arson, conspiracy to commit

2nd-degree arson, and lying to a peace officer.

Kirschner was sentenced Tuesday to 15 months to 20 years in prison for 2nd-degree arson. Evert was sentenced earlier to 20 months to 20 years in prison on the same charge.

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   The Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team says it’s arrested a meth dealer in Crystal Falls.

Wednesday detectives executed a search warrant at a residence on Oswald Street. They found more than 40 grams of crystal meth and evidence of drug distribution. The estimated street value of the drugs is nearly $10,000.

The suspect, a 37-year-old man, was arrested and lodged in the Iron County Jail on charges related to the distribution of crystal meth. He is currently being held on a $25,000 cash bond.
