DRUMMOND ISLAND, MI--   A conservation group in northern lower Michigan has created a nature preserve on Drummond Island off the eastern Upper Peninsula. 

The Little Traverse Conservancy says it's a gift from the family of Carl Forslund Jr. in memory of their parents, Carl and Anne Forslund. The preserve includes more than 56 acres as well as 1,800 feet of shore along the St. Marys Channel.

DRUMMOND ISLAND, MI--   A house fire has claimed two lives in the far eastern U.P.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office was called Sunday around 9:50 p.m. to a home on Johnswood Road on Drummond Island. They found the house fully engulfed. 911 calls indicated there were two people inside the house at the time.

Kyle Ray Messenger, 30, and his 5-year-old son reportedly died in the fire.

The incident remains under investigation. Deputies and detectives are processing the scene with the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI--   The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident on Drummond Island.

It happened Wednesday morning on Water Street. Deputies found 71-year-old Thomas Gibbons dead in the roadway. Evidence at the scene indicates Gibbons was struck by a vehicle, which fled immediately after the accident. He died of injuries sustained in the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about the incident to call the department at 635-6387 or Chippewa County Central Dispatch at 495-3312.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The U.S. Coast Guard continues ice-breaking activities this week, in anticipation of the opening of the Soo Locks on Saturday. 

Wednesday morning a cutter will conduct spring breakout operations on the St. Mary’s River near Pipe and Drummond Islands.  It will open the Pipe Island Passage and circumnavigate Drummond Island along the International Boundary Line into the North Channel.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   An Eastern U.P. man found guilty on child pornography charges has been sentenced in Chippewa County Circuit Court. 

Robert Henning, 67, of Drummond Island was convicted in January of 10 counts of child sexually abusive activity and 10 counts of using a computer to commit a crime.  He allegedly had more than 7,000 photos and videos of child pornography on computers and hard drives.

Henning was sentenced this week to up to seven years in prison. 

DRUMMOND ISLAND, MI--   A downstate man has died in an ORV accident in the Eastern U.P. 

Chippewa County Sheriff’s deputies responded Friday around 12:10 a.m. to Lincoln Road just north of Johnswood Road on Drummond Island.  They found that a four-wheeler had left the roadway and struck a large tree.  The driver was thrown from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. 

The victim is identified as Tyler Francis Butler, 24, from Sand Lake.

Deputies believe alcohol and speed were factors in the accident, which remains under investigation.  

DRUMMOND ISLAND, MI (AP)--   A missing U.S. Marine died of a self-inflicted injury after exchanging gunfire with two federal agents helping search for him. 

MLive.com reports that state police said Tuesday an autopsy confirmed the cause of death for Aaron Furness of Woodbridge, Virginia.

The 38-year-old Furness was found dead Thursday inside a cabin on Michigan's Drummond Island. More details of his injury were not reported.

DRUMMOND ISLAND, MI (AP)--   State police say two federal agents searching for a missing person exchanged gunfire with someone in a cabin on the Eastern U.P.’s Drummond Island.  

Hours later Thursday, state police found the person dead inside the cabin. State police say the cause was not immediately known.  The agents weren’t wounded.

The incident began around 2:30 a.m. when agents from U.S. Border Patrol discovered footprints and tracked them to a cabin. They were shot at and took cover while returning gunfire.

Eastern U.P. ice bridge to open

DRUMMOND ISLAND, MI (AP)--   An ice bridge connecting the U.S. and Canada on Drummond Island is set to open at the end of the week. 

The Canadian Border Patrol plans to begin staffing the reporting station at the Drummond Island Yacht Haven Dock on Friday. The station will be open on the weekends and closed Monday through Thursday due to a lower volume of people using the ice bridge.

Soo middle schoolers mourn classmate

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (AP)--   Classmates are making memorial cards for a 12-year-old girl who died after a gun discharged in the vehicle in which she was riding on Chippewa County’s Drummond Island. 

Shellsea Lefebre of Sault Ste. Marie attended Sault Area Middle School.  Principal Dean Paul says students are making cards and putting them on lockers.

Authorities say she was shot Sunday during a weekend youth hunt.  The island is in Lake Huron in Drummond Township, about 50 miles southeast of the Soo.
