WELLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Wells Township home was damaged by fire on Friday.  

The Escanaba Department of Public Safety responded around 9 a.m. to 17.25 Road in Wells Township. Officers entered the front door and found heavy smoke filling the residence.

Water was applied to a couch that had been burning. The couch was removed from the house.

Officials say a cat perished in the fire and a second cat has not been found. A dog that was outside the residence was not injured.

The home sustained heavy smoke and some water damage.

WELLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   No one was injured in a Saturday evening fire in Wells Township. 

The Escanaba Department of Public Safety says it happened around 5:45 p.m. in a residence on 16.5 Lane.

All people were out of the house upon officers’ arrival. They went into the basement where the fire was to discover it had burned itself out.

The residence suffered heavy smoke, fire, and some water damage.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

ESCANABA, MI--   Two people are in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase in Delta County.

The Escanaba Department of Public Safety says the chase started Tuesday around 9:15 p.m. on the 2800 block of 3rd Avenue South. Pursuit went through the city of Escanaba and Wells Township, and ended on 11th Road in Ford River Township.

The 26-year-old male driver was arrested for felony fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing and driving while license suspended. A 27-year-old female passenger was arrested on unrelated charges.

ESCANABA, MI--   The Escanaba Department of Public Safety is investigating a drowning in the Escanaba Harbor.

Thursday around 1:30 p.m. Delta County Central Dispatch received a call about a body floating in the water near Water Plant Road. Officers found a man floating face down just east of the Harbor Master building.

Police have identified the man as Anthony McCullough, 55, of the Hannahville Indian Community. McCullough was pronounced dead at the scene.

ESCANABA, MI--   An 11-year-old boy who ran away from Escanaba’s Upper Elementary School and prompted a city-wide search has been found.

The Department of Public Safety says school officials were speaking to Jacob Messenger Thursday around 11 a.m. when he ran from the building. DPS officers, troopers from the Gladstone Post, Delta County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Search and Rescue personnel, DNR officers, and volunteers from the Escanaba Township, Ford River Township, and Nahma Township fire departments helped in a search of the city.

ESCANABA, MI--   The Escanaba Department of Public Safety is looking for a man wanted on a six-count felony warrant. 

Officers say Matthew Ostrander, 36, is charged with check fraud – no account checks.

Anyone with information on Ostrander’s whereabouts is asked to call Delta County Central Dispatch at 786-5911 or send a private Facebook message to the Escanaba Public Safety Department.

UPDATE: Chippewa County, Wisconsin officials have identified the man as Jason Burgett, 42, of Wisconsin. He's lodged in the Chippewa County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond.


LAKE HALLIE, WI--   Police in Escanaba and the FBI think a Milwaukee man may be linked to the attempted armed robbery of the Northern United Federal Credit Union on July 5. 

ESCANABA, MI--   Two Houghton residents were arrested after they were found asleep in their car with a baby in the back seat in the Escanaba Walmart parking lot. 

Public Safety officers were dispatched around 1:05 a.m. Monday to the scene. They had to make several attempts to wake the two adults, who seemed to be in distress. Rampart EMS evaluated all occupants but found no medical conditions.

ESCANABA, MI--   The Escanaba Department of Public Safety is seeking information on the whereabouts of a woman accused of writing bad checks.

A two-count felony warrant and one-count misdemeanor warrant have been issued for Jessie Weissert, 38. She’s charged with check fraud – non-sufficient funds – three within 10 days.

ESCANABA, MI--   The Escanaba Department of Public Safety is asking residents for help in finding a man wanted on an assault charge.

Officers are looking for Trevor Newman, 19. A felony warrant for 3rd degree criminal sexual conduct has been issued for his arrest.
