ESCANABA, MI--   An Escanaba woman has been arrested for embezzling money from a vulnerable adult. 

Detectives from the Escanaba Department of Public Safety took the 37-year-old woman into custody Wednesday morning following a several-month-long investigation.  They say the case involves missing funds from a resident of the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.

ESCANABA, MI--   Escanaba police have shot and killed a dog they say tried to attack a pregnant woman. 

Tuesday around 12:20 p.m. the Department of Public Safety received a call that a loose pit bull charged the woman on the 300 block of South 15th Street.  When an officer responded the dog cornered him in a back yard, then attacked.  The officer shot the pit bull twice and it fell, but jumped up and ran away. 

After a brief search officers located the injured dog, which subsequently died from the gunshot wounds. 

ESCANABA, MI--   Police have released the name of the suspect and victim in an Escanaba homicide.

Escanaba Public safety was called early Wednesday morning to 206 Stephenson Avenue and found the female victim with a kitchen knife in her throat.  She’s been identified as Heather Batchelor, 32, the suspect’s wife and mother of two children.

Kallay Batchelor has been arraigned and charged with open murder/homicide, punishable by up to life in prison.  He remains lodged in the Delta County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is set for September 12.  

ESCANABA, MI--   Police are investigating a homicide in Escanaba.  

Department of Public Safety officers were dispatched around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday to 206 Stephenson Avenue on a report of a female with an object in her throat.  An investigation determined that an assault had occurred, which resulted in her death. 

Officials say an arrest has been made and the suspect is being charged with open murder/homicide.

The name of the victim has not yet been released. 

The name of the suspect will be released after they’re arraigned in 94th District Court. 

ESCANABA, MI--   The Escanaba Department of Public Safety is investigating a reported armed robbery at a local pharmacy.  

Around 2:10 p.m. Wednesday officers received a call about a gunman robbing the People’s Drug Store.  They established a perimeter around the store and searched the business, but were not able to locate the suspect.  The investigation is ongoing.

Public Safety was assisted at the scene by the Delta County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police.

Officials say further information will be released as it becomes available.  

ESCANABA, MI--   The Escanaba Department of Public Safety is extremely pleased with the results of it’s first-ever food drive held Wednesday.  

Elmer’s Country Market hosted the drive from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Detective-Sergeant Anthony LaPlant says in that time residents donated 1,700 pounds of non-perishable food and hygiene products. 

He says the items were equitably distributed to the Salvation Army of Escanaba and St. Vincent de Paul of Escanaba and Gladstone.
