MADISON, WI (AP)--   The Republican leader of the Wisconsin Senate says he wants the Legislature to reconvene this week or next to strike down Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ mask mandate.

The order from Evers, designed to slow the spread of the coronavirus as cases spike in Wisconsin, took effect on Saturday.

MARQUETTE, MI--   Starting Saturday wearing a mask will be mandatory for indoor church services, meetings, and events in the Catholic Diocese of Marquette.

Bishop John Doerfler says the rule applies to those over the age of 5. Priests, deacons, and others ministering in the sanctuary, which is located at a distance from the congregation, are not required to wear masks. However, Doerfler says they should during the distribution of communion or when in close proximity to the congregation.

MARQUETTE, MI--   Residents have to wear a mask inside businesses and police can step in to enforce it.

That’s according to Marquette County Prosecutor Matt Wiese. He recommends law enforcement first respond to people who are maskless with an educational approach.

“Even the governor said, ‘Look, we’re not trying to charge people with crimes or be heavy-handed; we just… we know that the science is now telling us that a mask can slow the transmission of the coronavirus.’”

IRON RIVER, MI--   The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department is strongly advising people and businesses to wear face masks to prevent the number of area coronavirus cases from spiking further.

Health officials say the number of positive cases has increased significantly since July 1. The department has received 10 new cases: nine in Dickinson County and one in Iron County. Of those cases, six of the people were asymptomatic. That means they have no symptoms but could be spreading COVID-19 without knowing.
