DUNCAN TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Baraga woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash in Houghton County Friday. 

Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post say it happened around 1:45 p.m. on M-28, approximately two miles west of Sidnaw. A Honda Accord driven by Roberta Vizina, 72, of Baraga was westbound when it rear-ended a Toyota Highlander driven by Karen Moller, 59, of Eveleth, Minnesota. Moller was stopped because of road construction. Her vehicle then rear-ended a tractor-trailer driven by Garrett Ayotte, 49, of downstate Bad Axe.

BESSEMER, MI--   A Wakefield man has been killed in a traffic accident in Bessemer. 

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office says it happened Thursday afternoon on US-2 near Fairview Drive. Deputies say Rex Smith, 41, of Wakefield was eastbound when he lost control of his vehicle and spun into the westbound lanes. He hit a vehicle driven by Alvin Liikanen, 86, of Ironwood.

Liikanen and his 87-year-old passenger Barbara Liikanen were taken to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

UPDATE:  The driver of the Ford pickup, Carl Patrick McBroom, 34, of Vulcan, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Acadia, Donald Joseph LeBombard, 66, of Vulcan, was pronounced dead on arrival at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. The passenger in the Acadia, Sheryl Ann LeBombard, 61, is in stable condition at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, WI.

The driver of the Chevy Impala, Troy Anthony Turini, 33, of Vulcan and his 3-year-old daughter were not injured.


UPDATE:  Ishpeming Police say the driver of the Navigator was Terry Orlich, 64, of Marquette.  He was not injured. The driver of the LeSabre, Robert Emanuelson, 85, of Champion, was injured. Carrie Emanuelson, 82, of Champion--a passenger in the LeSabre--died at the scene.


ISHPEMING, MI--   One person has been killed in a two-vehicle crash in Ishpeming.

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Marquette man has been killed in a crash with a patrol car.

Tuesday around 4:10 p.m. State Police from the Negaunee Post were called to M-553 south of the Marquette Mountain ski hill. They say a Pontiac Vibe driven by Nathaniel Carpenter, 80, of Marquette was northbound when it crossed the centerline and hit a southbound Marquette City Police patrol car.

Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was taken to UPHS-Marquette, and is listed in stable condition.

ISHPEMING, MI--   The driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal accident on County Road 550 has been arrested.

Austin Mitchell, 21, of Ishpeming was taken into custody Wednesday on a charge of operating while intoxicated-causing death.

Mitchell and his passenger—21-year-old Jacob Weslin of Marquette—were traveling on 550 in the early morning hours of March 25 when the vehicle left the road, hit a power pole, and rolled over. Weslin was killed.

No court dates are available at this time.

UPDATE, 12/13/17, 4:50 pm:  The woman who died in the crash has been identified as Patricia Fitch, 82, of Escanaba. The driver of the semi is Jeffery Egge, 46, of Gillet, Wisconsin.


ESCANABA, MI--   One person has been killed in a traffic accident near Escanaba. 

Public Safety officials say it happened Tuesday around 4:25 p.m. on Lakeshore Drive near Airport Drive. They say a southbound semi tractor-trailer was stopped for a school bus when it was struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by an 82-year-old Escanaba woman. 

PICKFORD TOWNSHIP, MI--   A 52-year-old man has been killed in a car crash in Chippewa County.

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened Friday around 11:30 p.m. on Pea Line Road in Pickford Township. They say a vehicle driven by Robert Roy left the roadway and hit a parked horse trailer.

Roy was taken to War Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Officials believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Michigan State Police, the Kinross Police Department, and the U.S. Border Patrol assisted at the scene. 

ANOKA, MN--   A Baraga firefighter charged in the deaths of two people in a rollover crash in Minnesota has been sentenced. 

Michael Johnson, 29, was part of a crew of Beartown Firefighters from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. He was driving in a convoy headed to Utah to fight a wildfire in August of 2016 when the truck hit the median on I35W and rolled.

James Shelifoe and Alan Swartz died in the crash. Seven others were injured.

Johnson told to police he used cocaine and marijuana in the two days before the accident. He said he fell asleep at the wheel.

DELTA COUNTY, MI--   One person was killed in a car-semi crash in Delta County Monday.

Troopers from the Gladstone Post say it happened around 4:50 p.m. at the intersection of US-2 and Garden Corners. Investigation reveals Donald Kuhr, 61, of Rapid River failed to stop his car when he left the parking lot of Foxy’s Den. As Kuhr tried to turn westbound he was struck by an eastbound semi.

Kuhr was extricated from his vehicle by the “jaws of life” and taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the semi was treated and released.
