LANSING, MI (AP)--   The 13 citizens who will be tasked with redrawing Michigan’s congressional and legislative district boundaries for the next decade have been unveiled, with most coming from the eastern portion of the state.

The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission is comprised of four Republicans, four Democrats and five independents who were selected at random from a pool of more than 9,000 applicants. The commission was created by a voter-backed ballot measure in 2018 and is meant to do away with partisan gerrymandering.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Republicans have sued to block the creation of a redistricting commission, contending people would be unconstitutionally prohibited from serving on the panel.
Voters last fall approved a constitutional amendment to have the commission draw congressional and legislative districts instead of the Legislature starting in 2021 — a bid to curtail partisan gerrymandering.

DETROIT, MI (MPRN)--   State officials in Michigan are blasting the US Supreme Court decision to reject cases involving partisan gerrymandering.

Michigan’s Secretary of State fears the ruling will have a chilling effect on challenges to government over-reach.

The High Court ruled it had no business deciding whether political boundaries were unfairly drawn because federal courts should not decide political questions. That likely includes a lower court decision that Michigan’s legislative map was gerrymandered.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Republican lawmakers have filed an appeal to the United State Supreme Court in a lawsuit that accuses them of unconstitutional gerrymandering.

Last week a federal court said that the Legislature and governor must agree on new political district lines for Congressional and state elections by August.

Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (SHUR’-key) says he’s in the initial stages of carrying out the order.

INTERLOCHEN, MI (MPRN)--   Judges say Michigan’s 1st Congressional District was gerrymandered and needs to be redrawn.

It stretches over most of northern Michigan and the entire Upper Peninsula.

Last November Republican U.S. Congressman Jack Bergman won re-election.

He got 56 percent of the vote in the district. Bergman declined to comment on the court’s decision, saying it’s pending litigation.

In their decision, judges said parts of Bay, Arenac and Iosco Counties were removed from the 1st and added to other districts. Those counties lean Democrat.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Republicans in the Legislature will challenge a federal court decision that struck down Michigan’s congressional and legislative district lines.

The court says Republicans went too far in drawing districts to the benefit of Republican candidates.

The decision says the Legislature has until August to come up with new, fairer district lines.

The lines were approved by a Republican House, a Republican Senate, and a Republican governor. GOP leaders say, yes, they were in control, but they followed the rules.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   A federal judge says Michigan has to hold a special election in 2020 for certain state Senate districts, and the Legislature and governor have to come up with new political lines for the US House, state Senate and state House districts by August.

A federal panel of judges says the district lines were originally drawn in favor of Republicans.

The court opinion says, “This court joins the growing chorus of federal courts that have, in recent years, held that partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional.”

Gerrymandering lawsuit can go to trial

Dec 3, 2018

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   A federal lawsuit accusing Michigan of unfair gerrymandering can go to trial.

The judges on the U.S. District Court panel said the League of Women Voters and several Democrats in the lawsuit have a case.

The lawsuit is against the Republican Secretary of State’s Office – that’s the office in charge of overseeing Michigan’s elections. It accuses the state of allowing gerrymandered political districts that unfairly help Republicans.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   A conservative group is spending at least $1.2 million to oppose Proposal 2, the Michigan ballot initiative aimed at stopping partisan gerrymandering.

Protect My Vote unveiled TV ads Wednesday that are running through Election Day. The opposition committee received the $1.2 million contribution this week from the Michigan Freedom Fund, which has had ties to the DeVos family.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   A national Democratic group is giving $250,000 to a Michigan ballot initiative that would create an independent commission to draw congressional and legislative maps instead of the Legislature.

The National Redistricting Action Fund, a nonprofit affiliate of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, announced the donation Wednesday. The group is led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
