House Speaker Lee Chatfield

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The Michigan House has canceled voting sessions scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday after a staffer tested positive for the coronavirus, complicating the Legislature’s final days of business in the two-year term.

Speaker Lee Chatfield says the employee works with several lawmakers and committees but “had nothing to do with” a hearing attended last week by President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey has sought to downplay his recent meeting with Donald Trump, saying Republicans told the president that Michigan state law doesn't give legislators a say in awarding electoral votes.

Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfield were among seven Republican lawmakers who met with Trump last week, days before Michigan certified Joe Biden’s victory and closed the door to any longshot, legally suspect bid to not award Michigan’s 16 electoral votes to Biden.

Shirkey tells The Associated Press is was a “very innocuous meeting.”

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield has slapped down calls by some Republican lawmakers that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer should be impeached.

Chatfield on Wednesday called the effort a distraction from what needs to be done in the state.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Michigan Republicans released plans for addressing the state’s response to COVID-19 Monday.

The plans would regionalize the state’s approach to shutdowns and adherence to the governor’s stay-at-home order.

The state house plan would break the state’s 83 counties into three tiers: those at highest, heightened, or standard risk for the spread of the virus.

Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield says Michigan has so far taken a one-size-fits-all approach, and that isn’t working.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The leader of the Michigan House says an indicted lawmaker will continue to have no committee assignments or staff under his watch after a jury acquitted him of lying to the FBI and deadlocked on attempted extortion and bribery charges.

A spokesman for House Speaker Lee Chatfield said Wednesday that “nothing has changed” with the status of Rep. Larry Inman. Inman was charged in May with seeking a bribe from a labor union in exchange for a vote to not overturn Michigan's prevailing wage law.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (MPRN)--   The criminal trial of Representative Larry Inman is underway in Grand Rapids.

The Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives testified Thursday.

Larry Inman is accused of trying to sell his vote last year. His lawyers argue that he didn’t change his vote for cash, he did it cause he was scared of reprisal from his boss—the Speaker.

Speaker Lee Chatfield disputed that in court Thursday. He said he wasn’t going to go after Inman for his vote either way and that he seemed to be desperate for campaign cash.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (AP)--   A federal judge says a Michigan legislative leader must testify at the trial of a lawmaker who’s charged with attempted extortion, bribery and lying to an FBI agent.

House Speaker Lee Chatfield, a Republican, isn’t accused of wrongdoing himself. But prosecutors want to ask him questions about Republican Rep. Larry Inman during the trial that starts next week.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   A ballot group that helped overhaul Michigan's redistricting process has discussed lengthening legislative term limits with Republicans who control the Legislature.

Voters Not Politicians, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfield confirmed their preliminary talks Tuesday. A proposal to amend Michigan's constitution to change term limits has not been finalized.

It ultimately would need voter approval.

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce has also attended a meeting to discuss easing term limits.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Governor Gretchen Whitmer says the budgets on their way to her desk are “a mess.”

The state Legislature voted out the rest of the state budgets Tuesday. It passed the School Aid budget last week, though Whitmer has said she hasn’t received it yet. It can take several days for the clerk’s office to proofread and prepare bills for the governor.

Resolution asks Inman to resign

Jun 5, 2019

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   The speaker of the Michigan House filed a resolution Tuesday asking for Representative Larry Inman to resign.

Inman is a Republican from Williamsburg, near Traverse City.

The resolution was introduced by Republican Lee Chatfield and Democrat Christine Greig.

Greig says expelling Inman from the house is still on the table.

“The goal is to restore faith in our institution, and so we feel, not only for representing the district but also the institution itself that we urge Representative Inman to resign,” she says.
