IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   One person was killed in a traffic crash in Iron Mountain Monday.

City Police say it happened on west A Street around 6:15 p.m. A westbound SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit a parked car on the 1200 block. It continued out of control into the 1300 block and struck another parked car. The SUV then rolled, ejecting or partially ejecting both occupants—a man and a woman.

Both were taken to Dickinson County Hospital. The woman died of her injuries. The man was airlifted to a hospital in Green Bay.

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   An Iowa man is in the Dickinson County Jail for attacking a motel clerk in Iron Mountain Friday.

Around 4:25 p.m. the man entered the Comfort Inn, and when the clerk asked the man to wear a mask he sprayed her with mace.

The suspect left the motel and sat in his vehicle in the parking lot. Officers say he had a gun in his hand. He was told to drop the gun and exit the vehicle, but the man left the lot and drove north on US-2.

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   No injuries were reported in a three-vehicle crash in Iron Mountain Wednesday.

Police say it happened around 1:35 p.m. on US-2 at East Hughitt Street. An SUV stopped at the stop sign was waved into the intersection by another vehicle stopped for backed up traffic on the highway. The SUV hit two vehicles that were southbound on US-2. One of the vehicles hit and damaged the side of the Antonio’s Pizza and Pasta building.

The driver of the SUV was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   One person was taken to the hospital, following a car-moped crash in Iron Mountain Sunday. 

Police were dispatched just after 5 p.m. to the intersection of East F Street and River Avenue. They say an 89-year-old Iron Mountain woman was eastbound on F Street when she failed to stop at the stop sign. She struck a moped that was southbound on River Avenue. It was driven by a 32-year-old Iron Mountain man.

The man was taken to Dickinson County Hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   A logging truck leaked diesel fuel after it crashed in Iron Mountain Monday morning. 

City Police and Firefighters were dispatched around 5:30 to US-2 near Hamilton. They say a fully loaded truck was southbound on the highway when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The truck left the roadway, came back on, and left the road again before coming to a stop.

Two power poles, a stop sign, a manhole and a telephone pedestal were all destroyed in the incident.

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   The Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team has arrested two Iron Mountain men for distributing meth in Dickinson County.

This week detectives took Michael Benvenuto, 64, and Charles Kline, 40, into custody. Benvenuto is charged with three counts of delivery of meth, three counts of maintaining a drug house, and being a habitual offender—4th offense. Kline is charged with three counts of delivery of meth and one count of maintaining a drug house.

Both men remain lodged in the Dickinson County Jail.

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   Five people were arrested in Iron Mountain Wednesday as part of a Kingsford, Iron Mountain, Norway, Dickinson County drug team investigation. 

City Police and Dickinson County Sheriff’s deputies went to a residence on the 600 block of East G Street to execute an arrest warrant. While at the scene officers arrested five people—three men and two women.

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   A Norway man arrested for his role in a seven-vehicle crash in Iron Mountain has accepted a plea agreement. 

Harvey Bennett, 64, was originally charged with delivery/manufacture of meth, possession of meth, operating while intoxicated—3rd-offense, and being a habitual offender—4th-offense. He has pleaded guilty to delivery/manufacture of meth and the OWI charge. The other charges were dropped as part of the agreement.

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   An Iron Mountain man charged with severely beating a 27-year-old woman in June has been sentenced in Dickinson County Circuit Court. 

Bobby Winebarger, Jr., 36, was charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder following the attack. The weapon was identified as a two-foot socket wrench.

The victim suffered significant injuries and had to undergo emergency surgery. Officials say she lost her spleen.

Winebarger pleaded guilty October 15. He was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months to 10 years in prison.

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   Two people are seriously injured, following an ATV crash in Iron Mountain.

Police say the accident happened Sunday around 2 p.m. near the intersection of South Forest and West E streets. Officers say two men in their 30s were riding in a 4-wheeler when a snowplow attached to the front made contact with the pavement. That caused the ATV to flip forward and throw both men headfirst onto the pavement. Neither man was wearing a helmet.
