Lansing mayor requests National Guard

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Lansing’s mayor is asking the governor to activate the Michigan National Guard in the city next week.

Armed protests are expected to take place in all 50 state capitals ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Mayor Andy Schor sent the request to Governor Gretchen Whitmer Tuesday, following warnings from the FBI that armed protests would be taking place at state capitols in the coming days.

New trade deal may bring more jobs to Michigan

DETROIT, MI (MPRN)--   Over the weekend the US, Mexico and Canada reached an agreement to replace NAFTA with a new trade deal in the comings months. 

Officials say the deal might mean more manufacturing jobs in Michigan.

The new trade agreement would require 40 to 45 percent of a car’s content be made by workers making at least $16 an hour.

Charlie Chesbrough is a senior economist with Cox Automotive. He says the increased wage requirements for Mexican workers may end up bringing more jobs to Michigan.

Nassar sent to Florida

EAST LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar is now in Florida.

It is his second move since going to prison six months ago.

As of Tuesday night, the Federal Prison Inmate Locator listed Larry Nassar at the Coleman II US Penitentiary in Sumterville, Florida.

Nassar began serving his 60-year federal sentence on child pornography charges at a federal prison in Arizona.

His attorneys say he was assaulted within hours of being in the prison population in late May.

FLINT, MI (MPRN)--   Flint Mayor Karen Weaver says a possible lawsuit is still in the works against Governor Rick Snyder’s administration following the end of free bottled water in the city. 

Earlier this month the state announced it would stop providing the free water to Flint residents saying that 90 percent of water samples taken in the city are now below the federal action level.

Weaver says although plans for a lawsuit were spurred by the end of free bottled water, it’s just one of many factors that could be included in the suit.

EAST LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   The attorney for a student suing Michigan State University says campus counselors discouraged her client from reporting an alleged rape by three basketball players.

Karen Truszkowski spoke with WKAR Tuesday. She says her client went to the counseling center a few days after the incident in April of 2015, but was deterred from reporting by staff counselors.
